The best thing to do before purchasing anything is research. With makeup, especially high-end makeup, it’s extremely beneficial to see the product on other people. Why do you think the beauty blog and Youtube worlds are so popular? While I don’t have enough lipsticks (in my opinion) to share the top 10 must-haves just yet, I do want to talk about a few of my favorites. When I say favorite, I mean these are the shades I keep on heavy rotation and add to my travel or weekender bag without a second thought.

As always, I’m NC 45/NC 50 in foundation shades for your reference. Listed in no particular order–because let’s be real, I love them all equally* for different reasons–these are my favorite MAC lipstick shades:

5 Must-Have MAC Lipsticks for WOC

  1. Captive
  2. Twig
  3. Whirl
  4. Diva

Amorous

Amorous is described by MAC as a “lovestruck cranberry” with a satin finish. I personally don’t get anything on the side of cranberry, but I love the color nonetheless. On my lips, it’s more of a cool-tone pink with plum undertones. Amorous a color I like to wear as the everyday mauve shade. It provides enough color to be noticed, but not so much to be the focus.

Captive

I know what you’re thinking — Chelsey, this looks just like Amorous! And to that I say, you’re pretty much right. The average person does not need both Captive and Amorous, one will do just fine. I happen to have both because I was so indecisive as to which one I wanted that I decided to leave with them and return whichever one I decided against. Clearly, I never got around to it…not to mention, there is a small difference between Captive and Amorous. Captive is on the warmer pink side, while Amorous is more cool-toned.

Captive is a pinkish-plum color with a satin finish that I reach for when I want a little flush of color without opting for a bold lip.

Twig

I’ve raved about Twig before in a monthly favorites post, and with good reason. Before Whirl, Twig was my all-time favorite. It actually looks a little pinker in the photograph than in real life, but this is what I deem as the “your lips but better” color. Twig is a soft brownish pink shade, suitable for a variety of skin tones. It blends with your natural lip color to bring out the best shade, so keep that in mind while purchasing: it will not look the same on everyone.

The best thing about Twig is the satin finish, meaning it provides a nearly matte look without the drying factor.

Whirl

*Okay so I said that I love them all equally for different reasons, but I have to admit that Whirl is my all-time favorite. It takes precedence over the rest because the color is everything I never knew I needed. It was even featured in my most recent favorites post.

Easily, Whirl was the most talked about lipstick shade a few years ago. While it was almost annoyingly overexposed, I’m actually glad the hype happened; otherwise, we may never have gotten this shade in lipstick form. If you didn’t know, Whirl was previously only available as a lip liner. Now, it’s a permanent shade in the lipstick range.

The important thing to note about MAC’s Whirl (and all neutral lip colors) is that it doesn’t look the same on everyone. I bought it because I liked the shade in the tube, but I was a bit skeptical as to how it would look on me. To my surprise, I immediately fell in love with it.

Whirl is a beautiful dusty rose shade that works with my natural lip color to create a deeply muted everyday shade. A lipliner is not required, but I usually pair it with MAC’s Plum liner to play up the deeper tones and add more dimension. The shade is a matte finish, which is my only gripe. Satin is the best of both worlds, so I do wish MAC chose a satin finish to keep Whirl away from the dry feeling after a few hours of wear.

Diva

Diva is also a matte finish and is a gorgeous deep red shade with blue undertones. If cherry red isn’t your cup of tea but you aren’t quite ready for a nearly black lip, Diva is the happy medium. Diva is my go-to shade for a night out when I want to wear a bold lip, and I even wore it on the most recent outfit of the day post.

Hello Loves,

If you are reading this, either you have olive/medium skin tone or you have trouble finding a right nude lip liner that doesn’t wash you out. The challenge faced by most of us is to cover the pigmentation and get the right shade of the lip product on our lips.

This post is going to be long, so grab a coffee and sit in a comfy place with ofcourse a pen and a notebook (if you like to write everything like I do..yeah I am old school) or save/bookmark this page if you like to 🙂

With numerous hits and misses, I have finally come to the point where I know exactly what suits my skin tone. I now have the shades which I can wear under my lipsticks or just alone. They work both ways..exactly the way I want them to!

So, here I am listing the lip liners in no particular order 🙂

  1. Maybelline New York moisture extreme long wearing gentle precision lip liner 63 Hazelnut

This is a brown tone nude liner and the formula is completely matte. It is creamy so easy to glide on your lips and will not make your lips feel dry at all. It is made in Brazil. I bought this in India and I do not remember the price it was for. I was trying to search this online and I could see only Amazon and Ebay links so I am guessing this liner has been discontinued or was a limited edition at that time. However, if you can get your hands on this liner, go get it. This is a beautiful shade and should cost you roughly £2.50 – £3 if you buy from Ebay or Amazon. BTW this shade is very similar to Mac Cosmetics Stripdown lip liner. So, definitely a bargain if you want a high end shade at such an affordable price!

2. BarryM Lip liner in shade 5

This is a rusty brownish nude liner and will complement many skin tones. This shade looks good at any time of the year. The shade looks quite similar to Mac Mocha lipstick. Again it is a matte formula and stays on the lips for quite long. It looks fantastic with a clear gloss on top when you have a summer tan going on and you look like a bronzed golden Goddess <3 Aaah Sun, sand, some highlighter and a kind of nude lips…you don’t need anything else…omg I want to go to beaches…Can’t wait for summers!!!!!!!!

This lipliner costs about £2.99 in the UK and can mostly be purchased during sales/discounts.

3. Mac Soar lip liner

This is the most famous lip liner and by far one of the best sellers from Mac Cosmetics. This is the lip liner that got famous with Kylie Jenner..Yeah this is the one that she wears! This lip liner is always sold out everywhere (online or in stores and even on Duty free counters on Airports). So you know how much popular this bad boy is!

This is a pinky brown or mauve-ish brown shade and is great for over lining your lips too. It works well alone as well as with various lipsticks. I have started wearing this liner with my least favourite lipsticks too so that I can get most use out of my lipsticks and this expensive liner.

This lip liner is made in Germany and is sold for £12.50 pounds in the UK…yeah bloody expensive for a lip liner. But Mac lip liners and lipsticks are known for best quality. And seeing it so much on Youtube and reading articles about how great this liner is, I had to get it ( just to see if it is worth the hype). But is it really worth the hype? Well, after buying this liner, I realised I already have very close dupes for this in my collection. But since I have spent 12.50 pounds on this, I have to make use of this as much as I can!

4. Rimmel London Lasting Finish 1000 kisses lip liner in 011 Spice

This is by far my most favourite out of all lip liners. This is my third pencil and I already have 4th one in stock 😀

This is warm rusty brown shade..very similar to Mac Mocha / Twig lipstick. This is very creamy and long lasting lip liner. This just looks so flattering on my skin that If I had to choose one lip liner to apply daily on my lips, it would be this 011 Spice liner by Rimmel. Trust me you won’t be disappointed after buying this. This is made in Italy and retails for £2.99 in the UK.

5. KIKO Makeup Milano Precision Lip liner in shade 301 Tattoo Pink

This was my first brown lip liner and being medium skin tone, I was not sure about this shade. But I fell in love with this on first application itself. This is not that grey-ish brown that look ashy on medium / dark skin tones. This is warm brown, a shade very similar to Mac Whirl lip liner. This brown definitely looks flattering on my skintone. This is made in Germany and retails for around 6 USD in the US. I bought this from Amazon US and paid about £3 plus postage to the UK. There are Smart lip pencils on KIKO Cosmetics UK website and they look quite similar to these but the shades are different. Smart lip pencils retail for £2.50 and are currently on discounted price in the UK. This was my first purchase from this brand and the quality at such an affordable price is a total hit for me. I will be buying more products from KIKO. Keep your eyes peeled for my upcoming hauls 🙂

6. NYX Lip liner Pencil in 831 Mauve

This is a cool toned brown with mauve in it. This is made in Germany as well. The formula is smooth and creamy. It has matte finish and is long lasting. This can also be paired with many lipsticks. This retails for £2.99 – £3.99 at various UK websites. The quality is great and price is really affordable too. Definitely a hit for me!

7. Jordana Easyliner for lips in shade Rock N’ Rose

This is another browny nude and is a retractable pencil. The formula is smooth and creamy. the texture is matte and this stays on lips for quite long. This lip liner is made in USA and retails for $2.49 in the US. The shade is a dupe for Mac Spice lip liner.

8. Maybelline New York Super stay Lip liner 41 Rosewood

This is a rosy mauve shade and is a retractable lip liner. The formula is matte and creamy. This lip liner is also quite close to Kylie Jenner lip shades. This is a perfect autumn cool toned nude. This is available in Australia for 10-13 Aus Dollars. I got this as a free gift when I bought some Maybelline products in India.
